In 1999, Nancy gathered up her old date books and journals, and sat down to write the story of a girl from Ohio whose remarkable voice and acting talents catapulted her to fame on the most popular, highly acclaimed and longest running prime time animated series in the history of TV.
Her book, My Life as a 10-Year-Old Boy, was released in 2000 and quickly became a bestseller. It is filled with humorous anecdotes about her adventurous journey as an entertainer and voice-actor, with more than 150 pages of a behind-the-scenes look at The Simpsons, the cartoon that reinvented sitcom and forever changed the face of American television.
Here are some of the highlights of Nancy’s life and career, dating back to her first “public performance” at age 10.
NANCY CARTWRIGHT - THE EARLY YEARS
| 1957 |
“A star is born” in Kettering, Ohio to Frank and Miriam Cartwright. Nancy is raised in this small Dayton suburb, the fourth of six children. |
| 1967 |
At age 10, Nancy receives First Place in an all-school competition for her reading of Rudyard Kipling’s How The Camel Got His Hump. |
| 1969 |
Only 12 years old, Nancy is invited to be the youngest member of the Summer Youth Theatre Company, a group of high school students that travels throughout Ohio performing musicals. |
| 1973 |
Nancy debuts on stage with The Centerville Town Hall Players in a performance of Wait Until Dark. |
| 1974 |
As a member of her high school speech team, Nancy wins her first National District competition in Humorous Interpretation held at Ohio University. |
| 1977 |
Nancy creates the character of “Lily Pad,” who appears daily throughout the summer on WING radio. |
| 1977 |
Following a visit to WING, Warner Bros.’ representative Anne Schwebel puts Nancy in touch with Daws Butler, aka Huckleberry Hound, Yogi Bear, Quick-Draw McGraw, Snagglepuss, Augie Doggie and Elroy Jetson. It is the start of a 9-year relationship. |

1977 |
Nancy attends college at Ohio University. |
THE CITY OF ANGELS
| 1978 |
Nancy transfers to UCLA where she majors in Theatre. |
| 1979 |
With Nancy’s first demo tape in hand, Daws introduces Nancy to Hanna-Barbera. |
| 1980 |
Nancy is cast as “Gloria” in Richie Rich, her first professional voice acting job, and becomes an official member of the Screen Actors Guild. |
| 1980 |
Nancy receives her first entertainment industry recognition, and first DramaLogue Award, for her performance in The Transgressor, an original play directed by Michael Edwards. |
| 1981 |
Nancy auditions and is cast for a new ABC TV pilot, In Trouble, her first television role. |
| 1981 |
Nancy graduates with a Bachelor of Theatre degree from UCLA. |
| 1982 |
Nancy is cast in the title role of the CBS Movie-of-the-Week Marian Rose White. |
| 1983 |
Nancy is cast in her first feature film, Twilight Zone, the Movie. |
| 1983-1986 |
Over the next three years, Nancy receives dozens of offers for voice and acting roles. She appears in the movie Flesh and Blood, popular TV shows such as Fame, Cheers and Empty Nest and voices characters in several animated series. |
AYE, CARAMBA!
| 1987 |
Nancy auditions for the role of “Lisa” in The Simpsons, originally a series of animated “bumpers” for The Tracey Ullman Show, and lands the role of “Bart” instead. |
| 1989 |
After approximately 35 short segments run on The Tracey Ullman Show, Fox TV gives The Simpsons its own half-hour TV time slot. The first show airs on January 19, 1990, and the rest, as they say, is history. |
| 1992 |
Nancy receives an Emmy for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance as Bart Simpson. |
| 1995 |
Nancy is awarded an Annie from the International Animated Film Society for Outstanding Individual Achievement for Voice Acting in the Field of Animation. |
AND THE BEAT GOES ON
| 1995 |
Nancy premieres her own one-woman play
In Search of Fellini at Theatre Geo in Hollywood,
and receives a Dramalogue Award for her performance. |
| 2000 |
Nancy’s book My Life as a 10-Year-Old
Boy is published and quickly becomes a bestseller.

Nancy Records The Simpsons Movie
