My Own Backyard
When last we met, I was off to Australia to do my one-woman
show. The show was a hit and I don’t care if I ever
see the inside of my suitcase again! (“Living out of
my luggage” is not part of my job description.) Despite
the un-ironed clothes and continually leaving socks behind,
the tour was successful, thank-you-very-much to all who were
involved in the create of it.
Since my return, I have continued with my Happy House (building
better families) activities, but decided I did not have enough
on my already busy schedule. So, local realtor, Chris Williams
(a.k.a. “Weed-whacker” Chris) and I have formed
a neighborhood watch group called “Our Back-yard…and
then some.” Chris has lived here for 18 years and raised
her four children here. She has a reputation of being one
of the best “weed-whackers” around. For the past
15 years, Chris has gone out and helped to clean up little
sections of our community by picking up trash, throwing away
bottles and most recently cutting down the weeds on all the
major streets in Northridge, including Devonshire, Tampa and
Corbin. She does her part to safeguard and improve our environment,
and I think we all could do just a little bit more.
As for me, one the main reasons why I originally chose to
move to Northridge was because this community reminded me
of what it was like growing up in the Midwest--Ohio. It has
a sense of “community” that I really miss. With
two kids of my own, I love the fact that the mall is so near
and that they can ride their bikes there. Unfortunately, I
have also seen the areas that need some help. Graffiti, trash,
and overgrown weeds.
Well, it is a new day in Northridge, and as Honorary Mayor,
I pledge that “Our Backyard” will be devoted to
their goal: “To beautify, clean up and maintain the
area, and make Northridge an ABOVE average place to live while
watching out for each other.” It is a worthwhile goal,
and one that aligns well with my other activities.
You know, it all starts at home! Ask yourself, what can you
do to help make this neighborhood a better place to live?

Happy House Attending Kidsfaire 2006
 For
the second consecutive year, Happy House will host a booth
at Kidsfaire in Orange County on October 7 and 8. Kidsfaire
is an interactive environment designed to enrich the lives
of babies, children and families everywhere. There are hundreds
of booths and companies collected in one place with one goal
in mind, bettering the lives of children and their families.
This is a perfect fit for Happy House.
Last year was a tremendous success, with volunteers happily
working “overtime” to talk to all the booth’s
visitors. This year, Nancy and her Happy House volunteers
will be back with reinforcements, eagerly awaiting curious
kids and interested parents with coloring, crafts and other
creative activities.

Heading Back to Frazier Park
Think Bart Simpson is a good role model? Well he’s
not. But Nancy Cartwright, the voice behind Bart on The
Simpsons, is.
If your family has problems with communication, cooperation,
mutual respect, and trust and if you want your home to be
a place of joy, calm and peace, please join Happy House and
co-founders Nancy Cartwright and writer-producer Rose Goss
for a family seminar on Saturday August19th at 2:00 PM in
the Frazier Park Community Center. In this interactive seminar,
you and your family will have an opportunity to participate
in role playing. You will come away with some very useful
tools to help you deal with the challenges you and your families
face everyday.
Happy House is a non-profit group that is open to people
of all faiths and beliefs, and is helping, through their seminars,
 to
build better families. The seminar is filled with useful tips
drawn from a lifetime of experience and uses common sense
tools that are so well articulated in The Way to Happiness,
a secular booklet written by humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard.Honor
and help your parents, love and help children, set a good
example, be worthy of trust and be competent are precepts
that lay out some of the key points to achieving happiness
in the family. Many of these basic truths are shared as core
values by major religions and all peoples of goodwill but
it is not always clear how to put them into practice. Nancy
and Rose share how easily one can put these values into action
in a family in order to build a stronger family foundation.
Nancy, a single mother of two active teens is the voice behind
Bart Simpson, and others, named one of Time Magazine's top
100 most influential "persons" of the 20th Century.
Rose comes from a family of twelve, is the mother of two young
adults, and has been married 32 years. Rose is a writer and
award-winning documentary producer. Both have a strong podium
upon which to speak to others about the ins and outs, and
ups and downs, of raising a family in our troubled world.
These professional women and experienced parents will share
what has worked for them in dealing with tough family situations.
You will walk away with some sane solutions on handling your
family problems better!
Bring the whole family. Daycare and play in the park will
be provided for smaller kids while parents and teens are invited
to join Nancy and Rose and get some important tools to make
your own family happier.
This 90-minute seminar is only $2.00, which also enters you
in a raffle for fun prizes. There will be complementary snacks
and beverages. Along with the snacks and beverages, all attendees
will receive a signed The Way to Happiness booklet as a gift

Put Your Money Where Your Mouth is!
With the recent craze in Texas Hold ’Em over the past
couple of years, it seems that everyone wants the chance to
hang with the pros. Well, a few celebrities and some distinguished
guests will have a chance to put their money where their mouth
is—all for charity, of course.
The Police Activities League (PAL) in Northridge is planning
to build a youth center for children that will host various
after-school activities in an effort to help at-risk kids
stay off the streets. Nancy, as a Board Member of the Devonshire
PAL, has offered to help raise money for the building by hosting
a semi-formal, Texas Hold ‘Em tournament and Monte Carlo
Party. There will be tons of prizes for those lucky or skilled
enough to get passed the pros who will be there lending a
hand for a great cause.
